Wolfgang Tillmans (1968-)
Tillmans is a photographer who is currently based in Berlin and London and is active internationally. He gained attention from the early 1990s for his photographs capturing the everyday scenes of his surroundings, and became well-known for his publications in magazines such as 'i-D' and 'Interview'. Distinctive motifs that Tillmans has photographed include portraits of young people on the streets and close friends, as well as questions about contemporary themes such as sexuality and gender, revealing a mixture of private and social elements. Since then, Tillmans' attitude of trying to capture the spirit of the times through photography can be found as something unchanging.

In addition, his innovative installations, which strongly consider the exhibition space and freely display photographs of different sizes without frames, as if the images were floating, had a great impact.

In recent years, Tillmans, who has published the photo book 'Neue Welt' (New World), has revealed a group of images of events occurring around the world and scenes captured by his gaze while traveling the world, attempting to show his views on various events taking place on this planet, such as political and economic issues and technological progress, and has shown new developments.

Thus, in 2000, he won the Turner Prize, one of the most important awards in the contemporary art world, and this year he was also awarded the Hasselblad Foundation International Award for Photography, which is given to photographers who have achieved great accomplishments. Tillmans continues to exert a great influence as a frontrunner in contemporary photographic expression.

This exhibition is a long-awaited solo exhibition, the first in a Japanese museum in 11 years, and will be held only at this museum. In the exhibition space designed by Tillmans himself, from photographic works including many new and recent works that will be shown for the first time in Japan, and video installations such as 《Book for Architects》, which was presented at the Venice Biennale International Architecture Exhibition last year and received a great response, the true form of the society in which we live, as seen by Tillmans while being conscious of contemporaneity, will emerge.
