Hardcover First Edition Steidl 2014 In original publisher shrink wrap. Unopened copy. Spanning almost three decades Moonshine by Bertien van Manen is a photographic diary of the habitants of the Appala- chian mountains. Between 1985 and 2013 van Manen visited and revisited Kentucky, Tennessee and West Virginia in her signature documentary style to record the daily lives of the residents. Colour and black-and-white images of seemingly insignificant moments in time make up the collection, and display the beauty of the everyday. Bertien van Manen rolled into photography almost by accident, taking pictures of her children with an old camera. As her work became more public she was soon drafted into the world of fashion photography. In 1977 she tired of the industry, and on discovering the documentary photography of Robert Frank and Josef Koudelka, van Manen began to explore the developing relationship between herself and her subjects, keeping a closeness and developing a personal, organic style of photography.
