◾️ Barbie is a fashion doll sold by the American toy company Mattel. It is 30cm tall.

It was released in March 1959 by Mattel in the United States.

It originated when Ruth Handler, one of the co-founders of the company, saw the doll "Bild Lilli," the protagonist of a single-panel cartoon for adults serialized in the West German newspaper "Bild," while traveling in Europe with her family and visiting Switzerland. She bought the doll as a souvenir for her daughter, Barbara.

Early Barbies were manufactured in Japan.

At the time, Japan had lower labor costs than the United States, and the textile industry was thriving, making it attractive because both the doll body and the costumes could be ordered together. Production in Japan was decided through negotiations with Kokusai Trading, which operated a toy wholesale and retail business.

Kokusai Trading commissioned Yamaichi Shouten, Nakajima Seisakusho, Sekiguchi, and other companies that are still central to the production of fashion dolls to meet Mattel's high demands and participate in the production of Barbie.

Production shifted to Southeast Asia, such as Indonesia, from the 1970s, and to China from the late 1980s.
